" I have been practicing Aikido for almost 7 years. It has been a part of the life now. I think the difference between Aikido and any other sports, according to my experience with the art is that it refreshes me after the practice rather than making me tired. I feel the difference in stamina created by other physical activities and Aikido. I joined the class after seeing the impressive techniques and in a motive of learning how to defeat an Aikido fighter. But now it is all about energy and I see a completely different perspective when fighting. "

What is Aikido ?
Aikido is a modern martial art founded in early 1940s by Morehei Ueshiba mostly regarded as 'O Sensei' meaning the Great Teacher. 'O Sensei' combined the traditional Samurai styles of warrior techniques, Budo, Bushido disciplines which he learnt from traditional Jujutsu schools and collectively termed it as Aiki-Budo. (An early form of Aikido). Post world war-II incidents and spiritual awakening of 'O Sensei' changed the methods of performing the techniques, while concentrating more on inner energy thus infusing an approach with Ki, hence became Aikido. The way of harmony with inner/cosmic energy.
Why Aikido ?
Simply because it builds a person in and out, thus strengthening both the physical and mental health. Injecting the ways of mind emptiness to the fighting techniques seen in the art it unifies the body and mind creating the energy levels similar to a meditating mind also termed as 'Dynamic Yoga' and Dynamic Meditation. Being a pure defensive style, Aikido relies on lots of philosophies, the main one being 'No-Competition' or 'Compete the self". The only competition available is competing own self to perform better each day of living thus making the art a life long study and a life style.
